iMessage Not Working? 9 Fixes That Get Texts Sending

You tap send, and nothing happens. Your iMessage is not working, and the blue bubble you expected turns green, says Not Delivered, or just sits there spinning. The good news is that iMessage almost never breaks because your phone is broken. It breaks because of a stuck activation, a tired Apple Account session, or one small setting in the wrong place. I ordered the fixes below by how often they solve the problem, so start at the top and stop when your messages go through.

First, Read What Your Screen Is Telling You

Before changing anything, look at the exact symptom. Thirty seconds of reading your screen can save twenty minutes of random toggling.

  • Your bubble turned green. iMessage gave up and your phone fell back to regular SMS. The message probably still arrived, but you lost read receipts and reactions. Start with Fix 1, and check whether the other person still uses an iPhone.
  • “Not Delivered” in red. Your phone could not reach Apple’s servers, or the recipient’s device is offline. Check Fix 3, then Fix 1.
  • “Waiting for activation” under Settings. Your iPhone never finished registering with Apple. Go straight to Fix 1, then Fix 6.
  • The iMessage switch is grayed out. The setting itself is locked. Skip to Fix 8.
  • It works on Wi-Fi but not on cellular (or the reverse). That is a network problem, not an iMessage problem. Go to Fix 3.

1. Toggle iMessage Off and On

This is the fix that clears the most cases, and it takes about a minute. It restarts the activation handshake with Apple’s servers without deleting any message history.

  • On iOS 18, open Settings > Apps > Messages. On iOS 17 or earlier, open Settings > Messages.
  • Turn iMessage off, wait about 15 seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Wait for the “Waiting for activation” text to disappear. Your phone number and Apple Account email should then appear under “You can be reached by iMessage at.”

Ask a friend with an iPhone to text you and confirm the bubble shows blue. If it fails twice, the problem is elsewhere, so keep going.

2. Check Apple’s System Status Page

Sometimes the problem is not your phone. Apple outages occasionally knock iMessage, FaceTime, and Apple Account sign-in offline together, and no setting will fix that.

Open Safari and check Apple’s System Status page (apple.com/support/systemstatus). Green on the iMessage row means the problem is your phone; yellow or red means Apple knows about it, so just wait. Check this before touching settings.

3. Confirm Your Internet Is Actually Working

iMessage runs on internet data, not signal bars. A phone showing full bars with no working data path still fails every iMessage, because those bars measure voice coverage. Open Safari and load any website to confirm your data path works.

  • Go to Settings > Cellular and make sure Cellular Data is on.
  • Try one test message on cellular. Hotel, office, school, and hospital Wi-Fi sometimes block iMessage’s ports, so a message that sends on cellular but not on that Wi-Fi points at the network.
  • If you use a VPN, disconnect it for one test. Some VPNs route through regions that block Apple’s messaging traffic, which stalls both sending and activation.

4. Check Your Send & Receive Settings

This one is common after restoring a backup or setting up a new iPhone: your phone may be sending from your Apple Account email while everyone texts your phone number.

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive (or Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on older iOS).
  • Under “You can be reached by iMessage at,” your phone number must be listed and checked. If it is missing, activation has not finished for your number yet, so go back to Fix 1.
  • Under “Start new conversations from,” make sure your phone number is selected. If only an email is checked, texts to your number fall back to SMS.

5. Sign Out and Back Into Your Apple Account

A stale Apple Account session is the second most common cause. Your iPhone presents an authentication token to Apple’s servers, and that token quietly expires after a password change or a long stretch without signing in.

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Messages > Send & Receive and tap your Apple Account at the top.
  • Tap Sign Out, wait about 15 seconds, then tap “Use your Apple Account for iMessage” and sign back in.
  • Restart your iPhone, then check that your number appears under “You can be reached by iMessage at.”

Simple idea: If you changed your Apple Account password recently, skip straight to this fix. A password change silently invalidates the token your iPhone was using, and nothing else works until you sign in fresh.

6. The Hidden Activation Text Most Guides Skip

Here is the detail almost nobody mentions. When iMessage activates your phone number, your iPhone silently sends a text message to an Apple server number in the United Kingdom. You never see this text, and it costs nothing on most US postpaid plans. But on prepaid plans without international texting, that hidden SMS fails, and activation stalls on “Waiting for activation” indefinitely.

  • On a prepaid plan, check whether international SMS is included. One international text is usually all activation needs.
  • Make sure Send as SMS is turned on (Settings > Apps > Messages), because activation depends on the SMS path working.
  • Apple says activation can take up to 24 hours after a new setup or iOS update. If a full day passes, sign out of iMessage, restart, and sign back in.

7. Deregister Your Number If You Switched Phones

If you moved your number to an Android phone (or a fresh iPhone setup), Apple’s servers may still think that number belongs to iMessage, and messages from iPhone friends vanish into the old registration. Apple runs an official deregistration page for this: search “deregister iMessage” on Apple’s site and enter your number to get a confirmation code by SMS.

Two related traps: if you just ported your number between US carriers, give it up to 24 hours, since porting and iMessage re-activation race each other. And on dual SIM or eSIM, check under Send & Receive (Fix 4) that iMessage is registered to the line you text from.

8. Check Screen Time If the iMessage Switch Is Grayed Out

A grayed-out iMessage toggle means the setting is locked. The usual suspect is Screen Time restrictions, often set long ago for a kid’s phone or by a previous owner.

  • Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  • Look under Allowed Apps (or App Limits) and make sure Messages is allowed.
  • If you do not know the Screen Time passcode, ask whoever set it. There is no settings trick around this one.

9. Reset Network Settings

This is the last resort because it wipes every saved Wi-Fi password, VPN profile, and Bluetooth pairing. It does not delete photos, apps, or messages, but it is worth doing when everything above failed, since a corrupted network stack can silently block activation while everything else looks normal.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  • Enter your passcode and let the phone restart.
  • Reconnect to your home Wi-Fi, then test iMessage again.

Bonus: Send Just This One Message as a Text

Need one urgent message out right now? Long-press the unsent bubble and tap Send as Text Message. That one message goes out as green-bubble SMS while you fix iMessage afterward.

What each fix will cost you:

  • Fixes 1 through 5, 8, and 9: $0. They are settings changes on a phone you already own, and Apple Support by phone, chat, or Genius Bar is free for diagnosis and software help.
  • Fix 6 (the hidden activation text): $0 on AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon postpaid plans. On some prepaid plans without international SMS, you may see a small per-text charge (often around $0.25), or the text simply fails and activation stalls.
  • Fix 7 (deregistration): $0, takes about two minutes on Apple’s page.
  • If hardware is truly broken (rare for an iMessage problem): $69 to $329 at Apple or a local repair shop, or $29 with AppleCare+.

Conclusion

Almost every iMessage failure comes down to a stuck activation, a stale Apple Account session, or a Send & Receive setting pointing at the wrong address. Read your screen’s exact symptom first so you start at the right fix instead of toggling at random.

If nothing above worked and System Status is green, contact Apple Support. They can see server-side activation blocks and account holds that no toggling will clear, and software help costs nothing.
