Your laptop sound not working turns a video call into a silent movie. You press play, the picture moves, and nothing comes out. Before you blame the speakers, work through this guide. Most silent laptops are fixed in minutes by a setting you never touched.

Nine fixes follow, starting with a 60-second test that finds the fault. Every step covers Windows 11 and Mac, because the top guides online skip Mac completely. You will also learn the traps nobody mentions: the Bluetooth profile that kills music, the stuck headphone jack, and the mono audio setting that silences one speaker.

Find the Fault in 60 Seconds

Do not change drivers yet. First, figure out what still works. Play a YouTube video, then drag the volume slider. If you hear a ding, your speakers work and the problem sits inside one app. No ding means the fault is system-wide.

Next, plug in headphones. Sound in your ears means the built-in speakers are the problem. Silence in both means the fault is deeper. A USB headset is a better test, since it bypasses the built-in audio chip. Finally, test one more app. If YouTube is silent but Spotify plays, that one app is muted.

1. Check Every Mute, Including the Hidden Ones

Click the speaker icon in the Windows taskbar and confirm the volume is above zero and not muted. Many laptops also have a mute key on the top row. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Sound, and confirm the volume slider is up and Mute is off.

Now check the per-app layer. On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Sound, then Volume mixer. Each app has its own slider. On a Mac, check the browser tab for a muted-speaker icon and right-click it to unmute. Zoom and Teams are the worst offenders: each picks its own speaker and remembers a wrong choice for weeks.

2. Pick the Right Output Device

Your laptop may be playing sound through a device that is not in the room, like a TV over HDMI or a Bluetooth speaker in another room. On Windows 11, click the speaker icon, then the small arrow beside the volume slider, and pick Speakers. On a Mac, open System Settings, then Sound, then Output, and select Internal Speakers. If your speakers are missing, open All sound devices on Windows and look for an Allow button.

3. Escape the Bluetooth Profile Trap

Your Bluetooth headphones connect fine, then you join a call and the sound turns thin, crackly, or vanishes. What happened is a profile switch. Bluetooth headsets have two modes: Stereo for music and Hands-Free for calls, which uses a low-quality mono channel so the microphone can work. Some laptops get stuck on it.

On Windows, check the output list under Settings, then System, then Sound. If you see two entries for the same headset, pick the Stereo one. Close your call app first, since it forces the Hands-Free profile. On a Mac, if your AirPods sound bad during calls, disconnect and reconnect them after the call.

Simple idea: if your Bluetooth headphones sound terrible only during calls, the headset is not broken. Your laptop switched it to call mode. Switch the output back to Stereo after the call ends.

4. Unstick the Headphone Jack

A tiny switch inside the jack decides between speakers and headphones. Lint or a bent pin can leave that switch stuck, so your laptop thinks headphones are plugged in when nothing is. The result is total silence from the speakers, and no setting fixes it.

Plug wired headphones in and out three or four times, slowly. Many laptops snap back to the speakers after a few cycles. Then shine a light into the jack. A wooden toothpick can pull out a surprising amount of pocket dust, but never use anything metal. If you see bent metal inside or the plug wobbles, stop. That is a repair-shop job. A USB headset or a cheap USB sound adapter works as a stand-in.

5. Restart the Audio Service (Windows) or Core Audio (Mac)

Sometimes the hardware is fine and the audio software has crashed. On Windows, press Start, type services.msc, and press Enter. Find Windows Audio, right-click it, and choose Restart. Do the same for Windows Audio Endpoint Builder, then test your speakers.

On a Mac, the audio engine is called Core Audio. Open Terminal and type sudo killall coreaudiod, then press Enter and type your password. The sound service restarts in a few seconds. This fixes many Macs that lose sound after sleep or unplugging a dock.

6. Run the Built-In Troubleshooter

Windows 11 ships with an audio troubleshooter that checks outputs, services, and drivers in one pass. Open the Get Help app from the Start menu and search for audio troubleshooter, then follow the prompts.

On a Mac there is no single troubleshooter, so use Safe Mode. On Apple silicon, shut down, hold the power button until startup options appear, hold Shift, and click Continue in Safe Mode. On Intel Macs, restart and hold Shift. If sound works in Safe Mode, a login item or app is interfering, so remove recently added audio apps one at a time.

7. Turn Off Enhancements and Check Mono and Balance

Audio enhancements add bass boost or normalize volume. They can also clash with your driver after an update and produce silence, crackling, or sound from only one speaker. On Windows, open Settings, then System, then Sound, click your output device, and set Audio enhancements to Off.

Check two settings that silently kill sound: Mono audio, under Settings, then Accessibility, then Audio, and the balance slider. If mono audio is on and one speaker channel is dead, you hear nothing at all. If the balance sits all the way to one side and that speaker is the faulty one, the laptop seems completely silent. Center the balance and test each side. On a Mac, check the same two settings under System Settings.

8. Update, Roll Back, or Reinstall the Driver

If the earlier fixes did nothing, the driver is the next suspect, and it is also the fix for the “No audio output device is installed” message, which means Windows cannot see your sound hardware at all. Open Device Manager. Right-click the audio device, choose Update driver, then Search automatically for drivers. If Windows says the best driver is already installed, get it from your laptop maker’s support page. Generic packages from random download sites cause more harm than good.

If the sound broke right after a Windows update, roll back instead. In Device Manager, right-click the audio device, open Properties, go to the Driver tab, and click Roll Back Driver. If the device is missing entirely, click View, then Show hidden devices, then Scan for hardware changes. A device that stays missing may be disabled in the BIOS, so restart and check the onboard audio setting. On a Mac, missing audio hardware after a restart points to a hardware fault, so run Apple Diagnostics (hold D at startup). The same thinking applies to other laptop parts, as our guide to Laptop Plugged In Not Charging? 8 Fixes That Work shows.

9. Test the Speakers Themselves

Time to test the hardware. Play a stereo test video and listen for each side separately. One dead speaker plus one working speaker means a single blown driver or a loose cable. Crackling at high volume usually means a torn cone, while a faint rattle points to a loose screw or debris under the grille.

Try the BIOS test: restart into your BIOS or UEFI setup screen and listen. Sound in the BIOS but silence in Windows means the fault is software. Silence everywhere means the speakers or their cable are the problem. Do not open the laptop to reseat a speaker cable unless it is out of warranty. Back up your files first. See Laptop Running Slow? 9 Fixes That Speed It Up too, since failing hardware often shows up as slowness before silence.

What each fix can cost in the US:

  • USB sound adapter or USB headset: $10 to $30
  • Jack cleaning at a repair shop: $0 to $25
  • Wired earbuds for testing: $10 to $20
  • New Bluetooth headphones: $25 to $249
  • Speaker replacement: $69 to $199, parts included
  • Motherboard-level repair: $150 to $400
  • uBreakiFix or Geek Squad diagnostic: usually free
  • Genius Bar diagnostic: free, speaker repair $129 to $299

Total: $0 to $30 if the fault is software. Hardware repairs run $69 to $400.

Conclusion

A silent laptop is annoying, but it is rarely a dead laptop. Work the list in order and test after each step. Most people find the fault in the first three fixes.

If you reach the end of the list with no sound anywhere, take the laptop in for a diagnostic. It is free at most shops. Back up first and check your warranty coverage before paying for a repair.
