Your phone alarm not going off is the worst way to start a morning. You set it, you trusted it, and then you wake up late with no warning at all. The good news is that most missed alarms are not a broken phone. They are one quiet setting doing exactly what you told it to do, or one small mistake in how the alarm was set.

This guide finds the cause in the fastest order: what actually happened, then volumes, Focus and sleep schedules, Bluetooth, battery settings, and the traps that catch third party alarm apps. Every fix covers iPhone and Android, and each one takes a minute or two.

First, Figure Out What Actually Happened

A silent alarm and a missing alarm have different causes. Open your Clock app and check the alarm itself: is the toggle on, and is the time right? If the alarm screen was waiting when you woke up, the alarm fired and you could not hear it. That points to volume, sound, or Bluetooth. If nothing was there, the alarm never fired, which points to Focus schedules, battery settings, a powered off phone, or a deleted alarm. Also check for a snooze you do not remember. A 9 minute snooze tapped a few times while half asleep feels exactly like an alarm that never went off.

1. Check the Alarm Itself: Time, Days, and Sound

Open the alarm and read every field, not just the time. A 7:00 PM alarm set by mistake will never wake you at 7:00 AM, and the 12 hour clock makes this mistake easy. On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then Date and Time, and turn on 24-Hour Time. On Android, open Settings, then System, then Date and Time, and turn on Use 24-hour format. Next, check the repeat days are the ones you need. Then check the sound. An alarm with its sound set to None will vibrate at best and stay silent at worst, so pick a tone you can hear from across the room and play it to confirm it works.

2. Fix Your Volumes: The Alarm Slider Is Not Your Media Slider

Your phone has separate volumes for media, calls, and alarms, and turning up a video does nothing for your alarm. Open Settings, then Sounds and Haptics, and drag the Ringtone and Alert Volume slider up. If Change with Buttons is on, pressing the volume buttons on your home screen can quietly lower that same slider, so turn it off if your alarm volume keeps drifting down. On Android, open Settings, then Sound and Vibration, then Volume, and check the Alarm slider on its own.

Simple idea: set a test alarm for two minutes from now, put the phone in another room, and close the door. If you cannot hear it clearly from there, your volume or sound choice is wrong, and you just found the problem before bedtime instead of at 7 AM.

3. Untangle Focus, Sleep Schedule, and Do Not Disturb

Sleep and Focus settings are the biggest cause of alarms that never fire, because they change behavior on a schedule you may have forgotten. On iPhone, open Settings, then Focus, and check every schedule: Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Driving, and any custom Focus. Also check the Health app, then Browse, then Sleep, then your Sleep Schedule. Pick one system and turn the other off. On Android, check Digital Wellbeing, then Bedtime mode, plus Settings, then Sound, then Do Not Disturb, including its schedule and exceptions. Also check automations like Samsung Modes and Routines and Driving Focus that turns on in a car.

4. Stop Bluetooth From Stealing the Sound

If your alarm fired but you heard nothing, Bluetooth is a strong suspect. When your phone stays paired to earbuds on your nightstand, a speaker in another room, or a car stereo, the alarm sound can route to that device instead of your phone speaker. Before bed, disconnect Bluetooth, or at least check that no audio device is connected. Smartwatches cause a quieter version of the same problem: a watch in silent or theater mode can take over the alarm and vibrate on your wrist, and if it is charging across the room, you will miss it. 5. Free Your Clock App From Battery Optimization

Android battery optimization is the most common cause of alarms that never fire on Samsung, Pixel, and other Android phones. The system saves power by putting apps to sleep, and if your Clock app gets put to sleep, its alarm can be delayed or skipped. Open Settings, then Apps, then Clock, then Battery, and set it to Unrestricted. On Samsung, also open Settings, then Battery, then Background Usage Limits, and check Sleeping Apps and Deep Sleeping Apps. If your Clock app is listed there, remove it, and turn off app hibernation for it.

6. Give Third Party Alarm Apps the Permissions They Need

If you use a third party alarm app like Alarmy, Sleep Cycle, or Sleep as Android, it needs permissions the stock Clock app does not. Without them, it cannot break through Do Not Disturb, run in the background, or fire at an exact time. On Android 12 and later, open Settings, then Apps, then your alarm app, then Alarms and Reminders, and turn on Allow Setting Alarms and Reminders. On iPhone, third party apps cannot run like the stock Clock app, because iOS limits background activity. Even then, a third party app is less reliable than the stock Clock app, so if yours has failed once, make the stock app your main alarm.

7. Fix Time, Date, Time Zone, and Update Glitches

A phone with the wrong time will fire its alarm at the wrong time, and you will blame the alarm. Travel, daylight saving changes, and manual date settings all cause this. Turn on Set Automatically for date and time. On iPhone, that is Settings, then General, then Date and Time. On Android, it is Settings, then System, then Date and Time, then Set Time Automatically. Software updates cause a second kind of glitch. An update can reset notification permissions, change Focus defaults, or introduce a short lived alarm bug. If your alarm started failing right after an update, check for a follow up update.

8. Rule Out a Dead Battery and a Powered Off Phone

An alarm cannot ring on a phone that is off or dead, and this obvious cause is easy to miss when you are half awake. If your phone died overnight, check your cable and charger before you blame the alarm. A frayed cable, a loose outlet, or a charger that only works at certain angles can leave you with a dead phone by morning. For overnight drain, check battery health. On iPhone, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health and Charging. On Android, open Settings, then Battery, then Battery Usage, and look for an overnight drain. For a phone that will not power on at all, see Phone Won’t Turn On? 9 Fixes That Revive It before paying for a repair.

9. Test It Tonight and Build a Backup That Cannot Fail

Never trust a fixed alarm without a test. Set an alarm for two minutes from now and leave the room, as described earlier. Then set a second test alarm for tonight, with the exact sound and volume you plan to use, and check it in the morning. For mornings you truly cannot miss, build a backup that does not share the same failure point. Use a second device, like an old phone on WiFi, a smart speaker, or a cheap plug in alarm clock. Put the backup across the room so you have to get up to stop it.

Here is what a backup setup costs in the US:

  • Stock Clock alarm: $0
  • Second alarm on an old phone: $0
  • Basic plug in alarm clock: $15 to $30
  • Smart speaker alarm on sale: $25 to $50
  • Replacement charging cable: $10 to $15
  • Speaker repair: $69 to $329, or $29 to $99 with AppleCare+ or a carrier plan

Total: $0 for the fixes in this guide, or $25 to $50 for a backup that covers every failure at once. Most missed alarms cost nothing to fix. They cost a late morning because nobody tested the alarm before bedtime.

Conclusion

Work through this guide in order and you will find your cause fast. Check the alarm itself, fix the separate alarm volume, untangle Focus and sleep schedules, disconnect Bluetooth, free the Clock app from battery limits, and test the result tonight.

Then add the backup. One alarm is a hope, two alarms on different devices are a plan. Set the test alarm, put the backup across the room, and go to sleep knowing your morning is covered.
