When your laptop microphone is not working, the worst move is to assume the mic is broken. Most mic failures are settings, not hardware: a mute key, the wrong input device, a blocked permission, or a driver that broke after an update. This guide finds the fault first, then fixes it. You will run one quick test that splits the problem in half, then work through nine fixes in the order that solves the most cases fastest. Every fix covers Windows laptops and MacBooks, and each one tells you exactly what to look for. By the end, you will know whether the problem is a key, a setting, a driver, or a part that needs replacing.

Match your symptom to the fix beside it, then start there.

  • Nobody hears you anywhere: the mic is muted, disabled, or blocked. Start with Fix 2.
  • Mic works in one app but not another: the app has its own setting or permission. Go to Fix 5.
  • People hear you, but very quietly: the input level is too low. See Fix 4.
  • Your voice sounds robotic or echoey: the wrong device or Bluetooth profile is in use. See Fix 3.
  • Mic broke right after an update: the update broke the driver or reset a permission. Jump to Fix 6.
  • Mic works with a headset but not built-in: the built-in mic is off or dead. See Fix 3 and 9.

1. Test the Mic First: Voice Recorder Tells the Truth

Record ten seconds of yourself in Voice Recorder on Windows or Voice Memos on a Mac. Clear playback means the mic works and the app is the problem. Silence means the laptop is the problem.

Watch the input meter while you talk: Settings, then System, then Sound on Windows; System Settings, then Sound, then Input on a Mac. A jumping bar means the system hears you. A still bar means the mic is muted, disabled, or not selected.

Simple idea: record ten seconds in Voice Recorder or Voice Memos before you touch a setting. Clear playback means the mic was never broken.

2. Check the Mute Key and the App Mute

Many laptops have a dedicated mic mute key on the top row, usually F4 or F8. One accidental press silences the mic. Press the key once, or hold Fn and press it. Also check for a physical mic switch on the side; business laptops often have one.

Then check the mute inside the app. Zoom, Teams, Meet, and Discord each have their own mute button. Look for the mic icon in the meeting controls, and check push-to-talk: if it is on, hold the spacebar to be heard. Restart the app after unmuting.

3. Pick the Right Microphone

Your laptop may be listening to the wrong mic. Plug in a headset or Bluetooth earbuds and the system can switch the input without asking, even to a device that is off or out of battery. On Windows, go to Settings, then System, then Sound, then Input. On a Mac, go to System Settings, then Sound, then Input. Pick your built-in microphone.

Bluetooth headsets add a trap. When one connects for calls, it switches to the Hands-Free profile, which sounds robotic. Windows may list the same headset twice: Stereo and Hands-Free. If your voice sounds robotic, disconnect the headset and test the built-in mic alone.

4. Turn Up the Input Level and the Mic Boost

On Windows, go to Settings, then System, then Sound, and drag Input volume to at least 80. If that is not enough, open the classic Sound panel, right-click your mic, choose Properties, go to Levels, and raise Microphone Boost to +10 or +20 dB. On a Mac, drag the Input volume slider right in System Settings, then Sound, then Input.

Sit closer while you test. Built-in mics sit near the webcam and are tuned for a voice two feet away. Also turn off audio enhancements if your voice sounds hollow or robotic. On Windows, uncheck noise suppression and echo cancellation on the Enhancements tab.

5. Give Apps Permission to Use the Mic

A denied permission looks exactly like a broken mic. On Windows, go to Settings, then Privacy and security, then Microphone, and turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone, then switch on the app. On a Mac, tick each app in System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Microphone.

Check the browser too. Chrome, Edge, and Firefox ask for mic permission the first time a site wants it, and a denied answer sticks. Click the lock icon in the address bar and set Microphone to Allow. Also watch for the orange dot in the macOS menu bar, which shows when an app is using the mic. If another app holds it, close it.

6. Fix the Driver: Update It, Roll It Back, or Reinstall It

Drivers are the most common cause of a mic that worked yesterday and broke today. In Device Manager, expand Audio inputs and outputs, right-click your microphone, and choose Update driver. If Windows says the best driver is installed, do not trust it. Download the driver for your exact model from your laptop maker’s site instead.

If the mic broke right after an update, the update is the suspect. In Device Manager, right-click the mic, choose Properties, go to the Driver tab, and click Roll Back Driver if available. If rollback is grayed out, uninstall the device and restart. On a Mac, there is no separate mic driver. Install any pending macOS update instead. Also restart Core Audio: open Terminal and run sudo killall coreaudiod, then enter your password.

7. Restart the Audio Service and Check BIOS

If the mic is missing from the device list, the audio service may have stalled. On Windows, press Windows plus R, type services.msc, and restart Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.

Next, check whether the mic is off in BIOS. Some laptops let you disable the internal mic at firmware level. Restart, press your brand’s BIOS key (F2, F10, Delete, or Esc), and set Integrated Microphone to Enabled. Also check for a BIOS update from your maker’s site, installed with the charger connected.

8. Clean the Mic Hole and Check the Headset Jack

Built-in mics are tiny holes near the webcam, and dust can block them. Shine a flashlight at the top edge of your screen. If the hole looks clogged, blow it out with compressed air. Do not poke anything in; a pin can puncture the mic membrane. Also peel off any case edge covering the top bezel. Many “dead” mics are just a case flap over the hole.

Then test the headset jack. Plug in wired earbuds and check whether their mic works. If it does, only the built-in mic is at fault. Try a USB audio adapter, which costs about $10 and bypasses the built-in jack. If its mic works, the jack is dirty or worn. See Laptop Webcam Not Working? 9 Fixes That Work: the mic and webcam often share the same cable inside the lid.

9. Test the Hardware and Know When to Stop

If the mic never appears in any settings, even after a driver reinstall and a BIOS check, the hardware may be dead. Test it with a USB microphone, which costs about $20. If the USB mic works, your built-in mic is the problem. A shop can replace it for $80 to $150, including labor.

Boot from a Linux live USB stick as a last test. If the mic works there, the hardware is fine. If it fails there too, the hardware is dead. Check your warranty first.

Here is what each fix costs in the US:

  • USB microphone: $20 to $50
  • USB audio adapter: $10 to $15
  • Headset with a mic: $25 to $80
  • Webcam with a mic: $40 to $100
  • Internal mic replacement: $80 to $150
  • Motherboard audio repair: $150 to $300

Most people fix this for free. A USB mic proves the built-in mic is dead, and it keeps you on your calls while you wait.

Conclusion

A laptop microphone that will not work is rarely a mystery once you test in the right order. Record a test clip, then check the mute key, the input device, the level, the permission, and the driver before the hardware. That order finds the fault fastest.

If the cheap fixes fail, the USB mic test will tell you whether the built-in mic is dead or the software needs a reset. Either way, you now know what to buy or what to tell the technician.
