Want to free up iCloud storage without paying Apple a monthly fee? You are not alone. Every Apple Account comes with just 5 GB of free iCloud storage, and that fills up fast. One iPhone backup plus a few months of photos is usually enough to trigger the dreaded “iCloud Storage Is Full” alert. Once that happens, your nightly backups stop and new photos stop syncing.

The good news is that most people can claw back gigabytes in about 20 minutes using settings Apple already gives you. This guide walks you through 8 free ways to clear space, ordered by how much storage each one typically frees, plus the mistakes that bring the “Storage Full” message right back.

Step 1: Find Out What’s Actually Eating Your 5 GB

Before deleting anything, look at the breakdown. Open Settings, tap your name at the top, then tap iCloud. The colored bar shows exactly where your space went: Photos, Backups, iCloud Drive, Mail, Messages, and everything else. Tap Manage Account Storage (or Storage) to see it app by app.

For most people, two culprits eat 80 percent of the space: Photos and Backups. Knowing which one is yours decides where your 20 minutes go. If Photos is the hog, jump to the photo sections. If Backups wins, start there. This one check keeps you from wasting time deleting emails when the real problem is a 3 GB backup of a phone you sold two years ago.

Way 1: Delete Backups From Devices You No Longer Own

This is the single fastest win. iCloud keeps one backup per device, and it does not clean up after you upgrade. That old iPhone 12 you traded in? Its backup may still be sitting in your iCloud, quietly eating 2 to 4 GB.

Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage > Backups. You will see one entry per device. Tap any device you no longer use, then tap Delete Backup (or Turn Off and Delete from iCloud). Confirm, and the space is freed instantly. Keep your current iPhone’s backup. One quick scroll through this list has freed 5 GB or more for people who have owned several iPhones and iPads over the years.

Way 2: Shrink Your Current iPhone Backup

Tap your current iPhone in that same Backups list. You will see every app included in the backup, sorted by size with the biggest offenders at the top. Turn off backup for apps that do not need it: games you can reinstall, streaming apps like Netflix and Spotify, and apps whose data already lives online (Gmail, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram).

Your next nightly backup will be dramatically smaller, and iCloud keeps only the latest backup, so the savings stick. Do not turn off backup for authenticator apps, password managers, health apps, or anything with data you could not recreate. The rule is simple: if reinstalling the app gives you everything back, it does not need a backup slot.

Way 3: Tame WhatsApp, the Backup Hog Nobody Suspects

WhatsApp stores its chat backup inside your iCloud backup, and videos make it enormous. A family group that shares birthday clips and forwarded videos can easily push a WhatsApp backup past 2 GB on its own.

Open WhatsApp, go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup, and turn off Include Videos. Then go to Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage inside WhatsApp, delete the biggest forwarded videos and files, and run a manual backup. Also turn off auto-download for media in chats (Settings > Storage and Data > Media Auto-Download), so the junk stops piling up again. If you use WhatsApp heavily, this one change can cut your entire iCloud backup in half.

Way 4: Clean Your Photo Library, Then Empty Recently Deleted

Photos and videos are the biggest iCloud consumer for most people. One minute of 4K video at 60 fps eats roughly 400 MB, so a handful of concert clips can outweigh your entire backup. Start with the easy targets: the Screenshots album, burst shots, blurry photos, and screen recordings you watched once.

Then open Albums > Utilities > Duplicates and merge every set. iOS finds these automatically. Here is the trap: deleting photos does not free iCloud space until you also empty Recently Deleted. Go to Albums > Utilities > Recently Deleted and tap Delete All. Otherwise your deleted photos keep counting against your quota for 30 days, and you will wonder why nothing changed.

Simple idea: open Photos right now, go to Albums > Utilities > Duplicates, and merge everything. It takes under a minute, it is completely safe, and most people free 200 to 500 MB without deleting a single real memory.

The “Optimize Storage” Myth You Should Stop Believing

Here is something most guides get wrong. Turning on Optimize iPhone Storage (Settings > Photos) does NOT free up iCloud space. It keeps smaller versions of photos on your phone and the full originals in iCloud, which saves space on your iPhone, not in your iCloud account. Your iCloud usage stays exactly the same.

It is still worth enabling if your phone itself is cramped, but do not turn it on expecting the “Storage Full” alert to disappear. If a guide told you otherwise, that is one reason the alert kept coming back.

Way 5: Set Messages to Self-Destruct After 30 Days

If Messages in iCloud is turned on, every meme, video, and photo anyone ever sent you counts against your storage. Group chats are the worst offenders. Go to Settings > Messages > Keep Messages and change it from Forever to 30 Days (or 1 Year if 30 feels aggressive). Your iPhone will delete the ancient threads for you.

For a surgical strike, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages > Review Large Attachments. You will see the biggest files sorted by size, and you can delete the 200 MB video your cousin sent in 2022 without losing the conversation itself. Just remember this deletes the attachment from your devices too, so save anything sentimental first.

Way 6: Park Old Photos in Shared Albums for Free

Here is a trick Apple barely advertises. Shared Albums do not count toward your iCloud storage limit at all. You can create up to 200 shared albums with 5,000 photos or videos in each, completely free. That is a million photos of overflow space.

Make a shared album called “Archive 2023”, add the old photos you want to keep, wait for them to upload, then delete the originals from your main library (and empty Recently Deleted). The photos stay visible on all your devices inside the shared album. Shared albums store compressed versions, so keep true originals of anything irreplaceable on a computer or external drive first.

Way 7: Slow the Refill So the Alert Stays Away

Freeing space is only half the battle. If you change nothing, the 5 GB fills up again in a few months. Two settings slow the refill dramatically. First, open Settings > Camera > Record Video and switch from 4K to 1080p at 30 fps unless you genuinely edit video. You will barely notice the difference on a phone screen, and each minute of footage drops from about 400 MB to roughly 130 MB.

Second, stop apps from saving every incoming photo twice. In WhatsApp, Instagram, and Snapchat, turn off the “save to camera roll” option so forwarded memes and snaps do not silently duplicate into your photo library. These two changes alone can stretch a cleanup from lasting two months to lasting a year.

Way 8: The Nuclear Option (Computer Backup Plus the Grace Period)

If you are still over the limit after all of this, back up to a computer instead of iCloud. Connect your iPhone to a Mac (Finder) or a Windows PC (Apple Devices app) and choose to back up all data to the computer. Computer backups are free, unlimited, and include everything. Then turn off iCloud Backup entirely and watch gigabytes return.

One warning before you touch iCloud Photos: if you turn it off to save space, download your originals first. When iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo on your iPhone deletes it everywhere. Copy irreplaceable photos to a computer or external drive before you delete anything from the cloud. If you downgrade from a paid plan to the free 5 GB, Apple gives you a grace period to get under the limit before anything is removed.

Here’s what this entire cleanup costs you:

  • Auditing your iCloud storage breakdown: $0
  • Deleting old device backups: $0
  • Shrinking your current backup: $0
  • Taming WhatsApp backups: $0
  • Cleaning photos and emptying Recently Deleted: $0
  • Setting Messages to auto-delete: $0
  • Parking old photos in Shared Albums: $0
  • Switching video to 1080p: $0

Total: $0, versus $0.99/month for the 50 GB iCloud+ plan. If your photo library keeps growing no matter what you delete, that 99 cents is honestly the cheapest peace of mind in tech. But try the free route first. Most people never need the paid plan once they see where their gigabytes actually went.

Conclusion

The “iCloud Storage Is Full” alert feels like a sales pitch, but it is usually just a housekeeping problem. Old device backups, bloated WhatsApp data, and a photo library full of screenshots account for nearly all of it. Work through the eight ways above in order and you will likely recover several gigabytes in one sitting.

Then set a monthly reminder to repeat the quick checks: Duplicates album, Recently Deleted, and the backup list. Ten minutes a month keeps you under the 5 GB cap indefinitely, and that monthly fee stays in your pocket where it belongs.
